Lions U16 Boys have nice win against local rivals

On Sunday 17th January, our U16 boys played local rivals Limerick Celtics in a Cork League Game. This game was played at Salesians Secondary School Gym – home to Celtics.

The young Celtics men made a strong start and took an early 6-0 lead. The Lions coach called a time-out and regrouped his troops. After the time-out, the Lions boys stepped up their performance and got on the scoreboard with a great pull-up jump shot from Nathan Moore. Nathan made another line drive to the hoop for two more points. Obinna Josephs got a great inside score to tie the scores. Eoin O’Donnell made a quick drive to the basket for two points and Dylan Sutton finished a strong quarter for the Lions team with a great three point shot.

The second quarter would see the introduction of Andrew McMahon into the game after a couple of weeks off with a minor wrist injury. Andrew certainly made up for lost time with his intensive style of play and added a couple of quick scores to the Lions tally. The Lions boys really stepped up their defensive intensity in this quarter and started to pick up a lot of steals and fast break lay-ups. Eoin, Nathan, Cathal and Obi added nicely to the Lions tally with a mixture of outside shooting, drives to the basket and some nice in-bound plays. This great play resulted in the Lions going into the half time break with a comfortable lead.

The third quarter would see more of the same consistent performance from the Lions boys. Again a mixture of inside and outside scoring during this quarter led to the Lions boys ending this quarter with a 21 point lead.

The fourth quarter saw the Lions boys step up their defensive pressure even more. This led to the Celtics boys struggling to score and the Lions boys running in more fast break lay-ups and eventually finishing the game with a 27 point victory.

Final score – Limerick Lions 65 – Limerick Celtics 38.

Top scorers for Lions were Nathan with 22 points, Eoin with 16 points, Andrew with 14 points and Obi with 8 points with Dylan and Cathal scoring the remaining points.

Also other squad members who gave a great contribution to this victory are Cian Thornton, Ronan Cregan, Joey Byrne, Sean Roche and Luke Fitzgerald.

Special mention to Nathan who finished the game with 9 assists, Cathal who finished with 4 blocked shots, Andrew finished with 5 steals and Obi who finished with a massive 15 rebounds.

Great work by all players today – hard work pays off!!!
